A People’s Choir is a casual sing-along. It isn't a performance; it’s a group effort.
We play the actual songs (not the karaoke version), and stand (or sit) around and sing.
There is no sheet music at A People’s Choir, only song lyrics, which we’ll provide in paper and electronic form. We don’t care about your singing ability, just your enthusiasm – and we’re pretty flexible in that area, too. Come alone or bring friends. Just show up and sing!
A People's Choir is a group sing-a-long created by Paige Reitz, Adele Hauser & Decoteau Wilkerson in Portland, Oregon. Every choir a theme is chosen and choir members (whoever wants to come) suggest songs via social media that they want to sing. Lyric books are provided. The choir simply sings along to the sound recordings - anything goes!
The choir began in 2011 out of nostalgia for communal singing. The power of singing together was so overwhelming that they just kept singing. Since the first choir, A People's Choir has hosted choirs at PSU's Open Engagement, New York's Art in Odd Places festival, Last Thursdays on Alberta, TEDx ConcordiuaU, PDX Farm Fiesta, Mobile Streetcar Music Festival and regularly throughout Portland.
A People’s Choir has grown across the US! Sister branches have popped up in Omaha, Pittsburgh, Washington DC and Austin, TX.
A People’s Choir was highlighted as one of the "Best of Portland” in 2013 by the Willamette Week and was included in Portland Monthly Magazine’s 2014 list of “Top 50 Things Every Portlander Must Do This Winter.”
